Annual Report

Year on year, millions of women and adolescents in 155 countries and territories have been progressively able to exercise their sexual and reproductive health and rights. This is in no small measure as a result of UNFPA programmes and activities.

The UNFPA strategic plan for 2014-2017 set ambitious targets for increasing access to sexual and reproductive health services. These services have empowered millions of women to make their own decisions about whether, when or how often to become pregnant. They have enabled millions of teenagers to avoid unplanned pregnancy, and to make safe and healthy transitions to adulthood. And they have slowed the unnecessary and cruel tide of maternal death.

STATE OF WORLD POPULATION 2017

State of World Population Report

Right now, the combined wealth of the world’s 2,473 billionaires, as calculated by Wealth-X, exceeds $7.7 trillion. That’s equivalent to the combined gross domestic product of an astonishing four fifths of the world’s countries
in 2015. It means that while some privileged households budget for billions, many hundreds of millions of families barely scrape by on less than $1.25 a day.
 
This is a path that we pursue at our peril. The yawning gap between the richest and the poorest is not only unfair, but a risk to economies, communities and nations. In 2015, in recognition of this risk, the world’s governments agreed that the path to sustainable development for the next 15 years must be built on a foundation of equality, inclusiveness and universal enjoyment of rights.

Maternal and Neonatal Health in Sudan: Results of a Situation Analysis Study

With Maternal Mortality Rate of 1,107 per 100,000 live birth, Sudan has one of the highest maternal deaths in the world. Moreover, for every woman who dies, 20 more suffer long lasting injuries or disabilities such as obstetric fistula, uterine prolapse infertility and depression.

The Sudan is in a critical transition period. The loss of oil revenues after South Sudan became an independent country in July 2011 resulted in a dramatic economic downturn, which has diminished the amount of government resources available for public services. Almost half of all Sudanese live below the national poverty line. The country faces severe challenges in reaching Millennium Development Goal targets.

Reproductive Health/GBV KAP Survey among Communities Affected by Conflict in Darfur

Publications

The armed conflict in Darfur, which escalated in early 2003, has exploited and brutalized over two million civilian, and further immobilized an already decaying infrastructure. It has caused systematic forced migration of populations across the region estimated at 2.5 million IDPs. Large numbers of displaced women are pregnant, facing delivery under dangerous conditions; others victims of violence including rape. Furthermore, the first half of this year, was marked by continued conflict, resulted in further new displacement of about 137,000 IDPs across Darfur; the expulsion of 13 international NGOs and dissolution of 3 national NGOs.
