UNFPA’s work in Sudan covers a wide range of services aimed at safeguarding the health, dignity, and safety of women and girls affected by conflict. Since April 2024, UNFPA has deployed 56 mobile health teams across 11 states, providing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) services. These teams have conducted over 153,000 consultations, ensuring that even the most remote communities have access to essential healthcare.
In addition to mobile health services, UNFPA’s Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC) interventions in hospitals across Sudan ensure that health facilities are equipped to handle obstetric emergencies, thereby reducing maternal and neonatal mortality. UNFPA's solarization initiative further strengthens these services by providing uninterrupted power, ensuring hospitals can operate around the clock with renewable energy.
Midwives trained and supported by UNFPA are on the frontlines, providing critical maternal health services in conflict zones. UNFPA has provided 600 midwifery kits and trained 460 midwives on standard obstetric care, enabling them to deliver babies safely and provide vital support to pregnant women.
UNFPA’s Women and Girls Safe Spaces (WGSS) offer a refuge where women and girls can access psychosocial, legal, and medical support while building social networks and acquiring skills. These safe spaces are complemented by community-based protection networks (CBPNs), which disseminate information on GBV and refer cases to specialized services, including emergency obstetric care.
To combat harmful practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage, UNFPA conducts awareness-raising sessions, reaching thousands of community members, while its ongoing efforts to provide supplies such as dignity kits, family planning commodities, and life-saving medicines ensure that essential health services continue despite the challenging circumstances.
Through its coordination of GBV and SRH services and its role in training frontline workers and stakeholders, UNFPA remains committed to supporting women and girls in Sudan, ensuring that they receive the care, protection, and dignity they deserve.
