Sudan Emergency: Situation Overview

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has displaced over 3 million people in less than three months, with more than 2.4 million displaced within the country and over 650,000 seeking refuge in neighboring nations. As violence persists, the number of people fleeing Sudan is expected to exceed 1 million by October 2023. Countries like Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic are feeling the strain of this massive influx, with border areas and displacement sites lacking essential infrastructure and services, including those for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and gender-based violence (GBV).

Humanitarian Needs

Sexual and Reproductive Health

Access to critical SRH services, including family planning and emergency obstetric and newborn care, is limited in neighboring countries where displaced populations are arriving. There have been alarming reports of women giving birth in the open without any medical assistance. UNFPA is prioritizing the strengthening of health facilities and the scaling up of SRH services through mobile clinics, skilled healthcare providers, and the distribution of life-saving supplies to ensure women and girls receive the care they desperately need.

Gender-Based Violence

Reports of gender-based violence are on the rise, especially as women and girls remain vulnerable while seeking safer locations. Many are housed in overcrowded settlement sites or sleeping in open areas, which increases their risk of sexual exploitation and abuse. UNFPA is working with partners to provide comprehensive GBV prevention and response services, including medical care, mental health and psychosocial support, case management, and supplies for the clinical management of rape (CMR), at both reception and displacement sites.
