The magnitude of displacement within Sudan and into neighbouring countries has continued to increase since the conflict erupted in Sudan in mid-April 2023. More than 3.8 million people were internally displaced in Sudan by the end of August, and more than 1 million refugees, returnees and third-country nationals have arrived in the neighbouring countries of the Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, and South Sudan. These countries were already hosting hundreds of thousands of displaced people even before this crisis. Women and girls who have sought shelter across borders in hard-to-reach locations are struggling to access sexual and reproductive health services. Protection services are also limited as sexual violence, and risks of sexual exploitation and abuse, increase.
